Eva's Maths Learning Story

Eva’s Maths Learning Story
“Do you like to work out problems and make your brain hurt? Well, I for one know I don’t”.

During maths we have been learning to find the whole number of a percentage. While we were doing this we got given this problem and this is what I did to work it out.

Rylee wants to find out how many students at Corinna School would like to do an activity involving skateboards and bikes in their lunchtimes. She sends a survey to 205 students. The survey results come back to her as percentages.

How many students want to do each activity?

My starting point was to look at anything in the problem that could help to work out the problem or help me to understand the problem.

What I already know: I already know that there are 205 students all together, 40% want to have a bike track and 60% want a skate park, so I have to find out what 40% is and what 60% is.

First I wanted to find out 10% because if I could find out 10% then I could times it by 6 and 4 to get 40% and 60%. So to find out 10% I decided to divide 10 by the full number 205.

205 DIVIDED BY 10 = 20.5.

Then I had to times 20.5 by 6 and 4 to get the 60% and the 40%.

20.5 x 4 = 82
20.5 x 6 = 123

I know that 40% is 82 students and 60% is 123, and if you do 82 + 123 = 205 and 205 is the total number of students so I know that I am not wrong.

Tip: I found out that when you are trying to find what the whole number of a percentages is, to make it a bit easier you have to divide the whole number by 10 to get ten percent, then what ever 10 percent is you would times it by the first number of the percentage that you are trying to find.

e.g 205 divide by 10 = 20.5 = 10%
20.5 x 6 = 123 = 60%
20.5 x 4 = 82 = 40%

The K.C skill that I used was participating and contributing. I used this skill by sharing my thinking with others and taking a risk by trying different ideas so that I might get closer to solving the problem.

Some things I found hard were trying to divide things and use multiplying to help me work out the problem. So I think I need to work on my division and multiplying so that it is easier for me.

Maths may not be everyone's favourite subject, but it is a good skill for everyone to learn because most things involve maths, so I try to learn as much of it as I can.

MY JOURNEY TO GREATNESS

MY JOURNEY TO GREATNESS

“Kia ora! Do you wanna get to know me? Well, it all started 12 years ago on the 27th of February 2006. I opened my eyes to see this hard yet AMAZING world. Wellington was my home. With my mum Martine Michelle Gray and my dad Christopher Mark Bishop. The name I was given was Evania. It’s a Greek baby name meaning goddess and peaceful.

5 years went by and I was a year 1 starting my first proper school. I was so excited when I first started. I thought it was so much fun until my last year as a year 6, which happened to be the most tiring year of my life because I had stacks of paper piled up in front of me every day.

5 years have passed now and I continue to play netball and softball. Netball has been my passion since I was 8 but I started to play when I was 9. I was in love with goal shoot as soon as I started playing. Some people might think this is impossible but I have scored 24 goals in one game. Crazy right?

Anyway, the other sport I love to play is softball and I started playing in 2016. It was amazing, I grew a very strong passion for the sport. I trained every day after school and even on the weekends. I got put as a catcher because of my ability to catch pitches that were too hard and too fast. It was only my first year playing and I made it into the Wellington under 13 representative team. But I got a really bad knee injury from being catcher for my other team. So I was still allowed to play for reps I just couldn’t play catcher because my knee had swollen up from the impact of the bat against my knee. This is my favourite sport. I will never give this sport up.

Kapa Haka is another strong passion of mine because Kapa Haka is a different way to show my culture. It also makes the Maori culture stronger. Even if you are not Maori you can still be in Kapa Haka. It doesn’t matter what culture you are, you just have to be committed to the group and give your all every week we practice.

I have a strong Maori Identity and love going to performances about the Maori culture. I’m going to tell you about some Maori events that I love to celebrate. My favorite day is Waitangi day. Waitangi day is the day when the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. It’s also is a chance for other people to embrace a different culture.

The other Maori event I like to celebrate is Te Matatini, because Te Matatini is where a whole bunch of group perform to get awards. Everything has to be perfect when they perform and everyone has to be giving it their all. It’s one of the best Maori performances ever.

In 2017 I was living with my dad and step mum Jacinta Valeliano Patelesio Bishop. They got married when I was 9. I love spending time with her and getting her to help me with my homework. She is Samoan. I love to learn her culture, I tell people that I am Samoan but really I’m only Maori, Aboriginal and Pakeha. I might not be Samoan by blood but I’m definitely Samoan by heart.

I try to go to church as often as I can with my step mum and her family. Since they are Samoan they are very strongly known for all their beliefs. We celebrate White Sunday at our church. It is a day where the kids get lollies and presents and all the kids get spoiled. I love this day so much because we get to perform in front of all the adults and we get to have fun with all the other kids. White Sunday is a day where Samoans celebrate children’s day.

This year is 2018 and it is my last year before college. I intend to push myself this year to accomplish more goals and achieve more in school to prepare myself for college. This is going to be my most challenging year but I will get through it and be the best I can this year and next year when I’m at college”.

Eva's Art Learning story

Eva’s Art Learning story

“Every artist was once an amatuer”- (qoute by Ralph Waldo Emerson).

In the first week of term 1 my class discovered a new art style called surrealist art. In this type of art you combine real and unreal things to make it surrealist.

I had made a surrealist potrait but when I went to find out what success criteria I used I realised that what I had made was a really good piece of work but it was not surrealist art because I just added something else to my face, I did not add anything else it did not meet the success criteria it was just kind of plain. I went back and started to plan again. After four or five attempts had finally created something that was surrealist.

While we were learning about this type of art I used the k.c skills of participating and contributing by sharing my ideas and taking risks by just going for it. The k.c skill that helped me the most was relating to others because we could friendly argue and share ideas about the problem.

I think I was good at just going for it and trying my best to work hard and focus on what we were learning, by finding a good place to sit and not distracting other people also not getting distracted, and by not making everything look perfect.

Somethings that were hard were trying to combine things on my portrait that show my identity e.g Cultural patterns and different symbols that represent me and my identity. It was hard because I had to try make something that included my identity while not making it random like my first one.

Things that I learnt were when you are doing art you never rush because if you rush then there is not much thought and effort going in to your piece of art, I learned this from the first portrait that I made. Another thing I learned was how to create a good surrealist portrait, by not rushing my second portrait, and taking other people’s advice using it to help improve my art.

I think something that could help me in other parts of my learning would be, taking a risk and not caring what happens because I know that I can always go back and change it.

I was feeling pretty confident with my first design. But when it got put on big paper I was not happy with the way it looked, so I started a new design, when I started my new design I thought about it well and when I was done I was really satisfied with the outcome of it so I decided to go with it.

Anahera thought that:
Eva self managed well, managing to ignore all distractions. Sitting alone helped her to produce a well created piece of art.

I had gotten better at learning how to express my identity in new ways such as a surrealist art. I also got better at combining things to help add more detail and to make my picture more effective and interesting.

I think my next steps would be to take my time and not rush it, also make sure that anybody Can look at it and tell some things about my identity. other than that I think I did really well.
