Marae Learning Story

Marae Learning story.

“Have you ever stayed the night at a marae before? Well I did on the 20th of june. If you want to know all the details just keep reading”.

Ko te whanganui a tara ahou

Tena koutou, tena koutou, tena ra tatou katoa.

So, that is who I am, where I come from and part of me. I hope we made some connections. Now onto the marae story.

Our purpose for going to the marae was to learn things about the  Maori culture and experience something new. In the end of all this I think we succeeded with the purpose of this trip because I learned so many things.

Haere Mai the karanga/call from the women. The first thing you hear when you walk in the marae. The welcome is a special thing because people are welcoming you into a new environment that you have yet to experience.

After that I helped cooked. We cooked roast veggies, lasagna, soup and apple crumble. It was like a 4 course meal, the roast veggies were a little treat, the soup was appetizers, the lasagna was the main course, and the apple crumble was the delicious dessert.

Something I found hard about cooking was trying to peel the apples for the apple crumble because the apples were really slippery and the peelers were just sliding off of the apple. I really enjoyed it though because I got to spend time with my friends and we made lots of memories cooking.

My favorite part about the marae was when we got to sleep. The reason for this is because I got to experience something new and I also found out what carvings represent Ngati Kahungunu and Ngati Porou.

I thought this trip was a great experience to learn more about my culture. It also gave me a chance to ask lots of questions about the marae and the Maori carvings.

The K.C skills I think I used the most were managing self, because I managed myself when we were cooking without an adult. I also used thinking because I had to think of ways that could help us cook faster.

I think the k.c skill I need to work is relating to others because I did not want to join in for some games for e.g, charades I thought it would be too embarrassing to play so I sat out, other then that I think I was pretty good.

I would love to stay there again it was such a great experience I had the most fun time with everyone.

Dear diary polution story

“Have you ever wondered what secrets the ocean holds? Well, this is something I found out on the 22nd of October 2012”.

Dear Diary,

Today I was at the beach having a normal day just like any other human being, I wanted to get wet but it was too cold, so I went and sat next to the ocean. Sometimes I wonder what’s in the ocean and what secrets the ocean holds. I decided to dip my hand in the ocean, at that very moment I discovered all the answers to my question. When I felt the touch of the frozen sea upon my hand, I found a pathway to the honest truth, more like the disgusting truth about what’s in the ocean.

When I looked inside the pathway I saw bottles, glass, rubber bands and much more disgusting old rubbish. The worst thing was the blackness at the end of the pathway it smelled like oil, oil that had just been dumped in the sea, I also saw something shocking, there was a turtle wrapped in a plastic six-pack can holder, the turtle was being strangled to death.

I had to do something so I laid face down on the sand and crawled into the opening of the pathway. I found it hard to breathe due to the disgusting smell of all the rubbish. Once I had grabbed a hold of the turtles back flipper I pulled it towards me and started cutting the plastic, I used the pocket knife that I keep in my pocket for emergency purpose. Well, this sure was an emergency.

Once the turtle was safe I brought it up to the surface with me, placed it on top of the ocean and watched it glide away into the far distance. On my way home I picked up lots of pieces of rubbish that was left on the streets.
When I got home I reflected on what I had seen, from that day on I vowed to clean up the streets and pick up all the rubbish. Now I know what is happening in our street and in the ocean, so I know how to help keep the world be clean and stay healthy, we are not the only ones who have to stay healthy other things too.
