Swimming Learning Story.
“This life is like a swimming pool. You dive into the water, but you can’t see how deep it is”. (quote by Dennis Rodman).
Some things are worth learning because they are a life lesson.
Term 3, Week 1
It’s the first week of Term 3 and we are learning how to swim, a life lesson we all have to learn especially if you live around New Zealand. In New Zealand, we need to be able to swim because New Zealand is surrounded by ocean, also because of the many deaths. For e.g in 2016, there were 78 people that had drowned, (intended to be in the water) and non-recreational (no intention of being in the water) preventable drowning fatalities. In 2017 out of the 104 that drowned there were 88 that were preventable. Also in 2018, there were 40 deaths that could have been preventable.
So that’s why I went swimming. The purpose of the swimming lessons was to help us learn how to swim so we can be safe in the water.
During swimming, we learned lots of different swimming styles like backstroke, freestyle, breaststroke, chicken airplane soldier and much more. I liked learning how to breathe properly while swimming, it really helped to know when to take a breath, for e.g turn your head to the side after 3/5 strokes, the reason for this so that you have an easy time to hold your breath and you don’t struggle to breathe.
We also learned about boat safety. While we were learning about boat safety we learned things like how to flip a boat back over, how to balance the boat and how to be safe on the boat.
The K.C skill I used was managing-self because I took the lessons seriously because I know how important water safety is. I also used participating and contributing because I took a risk to do a thing I’m not quite used to, I was stepping out of my comfort zone.
Something I think I could work on is freestyle because my arms get tired but I think I could have pushed myself to keep going and not stop halfway in the lap.
I would love to learn more it was a really good experience and it was also really fun.
