polyfest moment in time

MOMENT IN TIME…
NAME: EVANIA OPAL BISHOP

IMG_7195.JPGIMG_8067.JPG
“Katie look at how many people are out there I feel like I am going to faint”

“It’s ok you will be fine now go and show them an amazing performance”

FLASH, the gold gleaming light beams down on us as we walk out the door towards the stage. My heart is pounding like a volcano that is about to explode. As I walk on the stage I know I can not turn back now. I can feel all the butterflies flying around in my stomach like heaps of madmen.

Just then the music turns on and I know we had just started our second song. I look to the crowd and can see their faces light up with excitement. I’m so worried that I might forget some of the moves but I tell  myself I will be fine everything will be ok. I can hear the crowd cheering for us and families encouraging their kids.

Then I take another long gaze though the crowd and I spot my family and my parents. They are waving at me like crazy trying to get my attention. They were giving me the most biggest smile ever.

polyfest learning story

For the past term and two weeks I have been practicing for Corinna’s Polyfest. Polyfest is like a big concert where we get to perform and showcase our culture for example there was Junior Maori, Tokelau/Tuvalu, Junior Samoan & Cook Island. I was apart of the Senior Samoan and Kapa Haka group.

For Senior Samoan we had six items they were Mitamitanga which was our entrance song, Tausagi Mai Manu E a collaborative dance with the boys, E Le Matalasi a song for the girls and also danced to, the boys fafa dance to Siva Samoa Remix and then finished off with a Taualuga which is a traditional finishing song and had a Taupou (a ceremonial hostess in charge of entertaining visitors etc usually a girl in high ranks) and that girl was Leitoria Talataina.

Our practices were hard because when we had practices it would that us ages to get into our line. So we had to practice lots more then all the other groups. We also had to practice our transitions, if you don’t know what transitions means it mean how you move around on the stage and how you get into different places during the performance.

After the performance my mum and dad said that they were really proud of me dancing in the Samoan group because she has never seen me dance in the Samoan group before. My dad also said that he could see that I was trying my best and trying to do a pukana.

What I think I could work on:
I think I could work on asking more people to help me learn the moves to the song.
I think I could work on smiling when we are dancing.
I think I could work on trying to be patient when we are waiting for our turn off stage.

I got feedback from Aria and Angel and they said:
Angel: I think you were really good at learning the actions to the song and the words to the song.

Aria: you were really good at learning the actions to the songs in kapa haka.

Eva's End Of The Year Report.

Eva’s End Of The Year Report

“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievements, nothing can be done without hope and confidence”  (Helen Keller)

I am good at being confident in Kapa Haka. I show my confidence by having sharp actions, standing proud, looking at the audience, and showing different facial expressions for different songs. I am also good at being confident when we were at polyfest. I showed my confidence by using what I had learnt from Kapa Haka to stand strong throughout all of our six items that we performed.

Being confident is a good thing because it means you will have more opportunities to to be a leader like saying speeches to new people, like teachers and new students that come to visit our school. I participated in Polyfest, kapa haka, the broadcasting trip, girls soccer tournament and netball. I feel happy and proud of myself for participating in all those things because they gave me opportunities to learn new things. .

I think I have been really successful at finishing really important things off and taking people's advice and using it to help improve my own stories.

Throughout this year I have had some troubles at school but I tried to sort things out as quick as I can so that I can build my relationship and trust back with my teachers and Mrs. Whiting. One of the most challenging things I participated in was camp because most of us were not used to sleeping out in tents with no pillow and being freezing cold but we all managed to get through it.

A goal I have achieved this year is getting better at maths. I did this by not giving up even when the problem is really hard and trying to stay on board the waka. I think my best learning was our cool quick writes because I always tried my best to make a short but interesting story that hooks in my reader and paints a picture in their head. I think I am a successful learner because I can stay focused on my work by choosing a good place to sit and to sit next to people that are going to help me not distract me.

I think a K.C skill that I need to work on is relating to others because sometimes I can be picky with who I want to work with and I want to stop that and just be able to work with anyone. Being able to relate to others is important because it means you can work with anyone, that will help me in the future because it will give me a chance to meet new people and be able to share all of my ideas with them.

Some things I try to do to help my classroom be a safe, fun, and quality learning environment by showing respect to the teacher and the students that come to play in our classroom, and alway saying positive things to people and not putting them down.

The job that I had applied for this year was a greeter. A greeter is a person that introduces visitors and shows them around the school. I also make them feel welcome to the school. That was the only job I applied for, I wanted to apply for more but I think I was just too shy.

I think the key competency I use to support my learning the most is thinking because I had to think of different ways to explain things to my group and I had to think of what are some other ways to solve a math problem.

My favorite subjects are reading and writing because they both help me to improve my writing because in reading you can use someone else's ideas from their story and add it your own story but you could add a little twist to it to make it sound a bit more interesting.
Some things I have achieved this year was playing in the girls soccer tournament, receiving a camp award as well as a principal's award. I am happy that I got those awards but I think I could have earned some more awards by being more responsible and taking more opportunities.

Next year I want to apply for more jobs like greeter, kindergarten reader, school photographer, chromebook ambassador, and hui organiser. The reason why I what to apply for those jobs is because it can help me build up my confidence and it means that I have stepped up as a leader and I will be taking on more responsibility. But my number one goal is to be the person that kids younger than me look up to.

Eva's Athletics Learning Story

“ Success is isn’t given. It’s earned. On the track, on the field, in the gym. With blood, sweat and the occasional tears.”
The 27th of october 2017 was the most tiring day ever because we had athletics. Athletics is where you challenge yourself and not other people,. It is where you try to be the best the you can be and push yourself to the limit.
Athletics has lots of different activities. E.g Shot put, Discus, Sprints, Long Distance Run, High Jump, long jump and voltex.

The first thing we did was rest/play. While we were resting/playing we watched others to see what they did to be good. We also cheered people on and encouraged them to keep on trying.

Then we moved on to Discus I think I did really well to get a gold and it was only my first time. I had to learn how to hold the discus before I threw so I threw it in the right direction. I think I got better at throwing the Discus further and beating my last throw because I took the teacher's advice. The teacher’s advice was to bend your knees more and try to throw straight and then you will get a better and longer throw. My next steps for Discus would be put more power into my throw by bending my knees more.

Next we had sprints. Sprints is not one of my best skills but I tried. I scored a bronze because I was mucking around and not trying my best. I need to work on not getting distracted when the teacher is giving our instructions and listening to the teacher when she says who is running next, also not being picky with who I run with and not trying to beat other people a just focusing on myself.

Straight after that we had more running but this time it was long distance running. I came third and I got a silver, I tried my best I got tired along the way but I kept pushing myself to do my best. At the end I was very proud of myself because I did not stop throughout the whole run. I think I could work on trying to pace myself, that means I go the same pace until the end so that I don’t get so tired after.

Then we got into some jumping activities. Our first one was high jump. I’m not a big fan of high jump because it’s hard,  but I still gave it a go. I made it over the first one and then I didn’t want to do it anymore, so I sat down not distracting anyone else but I was encouraging them to keep trying and giving them helpful advice that could help the to improve their next jump. I think I could work on trying to give it a go and not just trying out the little bar but setting a new record of how high I can jump over the bar and not how high anyone else can jump.

Our next jumping activity was long jump. Most of us got bronze . I found out that they measure from where your heel lands not where the top of your foot lands. I think I could work on trying to get a better run up, learning how to time my jump and jumping right at the top of the red mat.

Now for my favorite activity of all voltex. I think I did really well in voltex I got a gold. I learned how to throw a voltex when I was 9 and then I just got better and better when I kept trying. I think I did really well because of my stance and because I throw it straight and not too high. I think I could work on not wasting all my power in the practice throw and just throwing it softly and then when we have the real throw I could try to throw as hard as I could.

Now for our last Activity shot put. I think I did alright for my first time ever throwing a shot put. I got a silver for shot put. I Think I could work on getting people to teach me how to hold the shot put and how to throw the shot put.

Throughout that whole day it think I did really well because I gave everything a go, but I did not try my hardest on everything and that is one thing I want to work on.

broad casting trip learning story

IMG20170901111215.jpg
On Friday the 1st of September some kids got an opportunity to go on a broad casting trip to Wellington, where we got to meet some people for a company called TAG. TAG is a place where we get to make some short but interesting movies using a green screen. The kids that got chosen are kids that might be passionate about drama and acting. We had to take the bus to Wellington, we did not have to pick up any other schools so the bus had lots of space.

When we got into the building, we all went up some stairs and sat in a room. Some people came and introduced themselves to us and said that they would show us some short videos that they made on the green screen. They looked so cool. After that they explained to us what we were going to be doing. They wanted to give us a tour of the green screen and were we allowed to go. Then they put us into groups of four or five and we had to work as a team to create a short video.

We got given some pieces of paper that said what the theme is going to be or a sentence that we had to add into our movies. We also got one prop that we had to use. My groups theme was time travel. Our sentence that we had to use was “We should try just one more time”. And the prop that we had was a coconut. At first my group struggled to try and make a story but then Miss Ardelle gave us some advice about time travel, then we were good to go.

After that some groups got to go and start acting and recording on the green screen. So while that was happening we had to wait in another room. When we were in that room one of the ladies for the company said that we had to be very quiet because there sound recorded picks up lots of sound and they don’t want to hear us in the background.

Then it was my group's turn, We finished earlier than all the rest of the groups because we did not have to keep on re shooting our movie. Then we all got called into the room and we got told that they would not let us see it because they still had to edit the movies and make some changes to the movies.

I think my group was good at trying to work as a team because when we had to brainstorm ideas we were all helping each other think about what can happen. I think my group was good at trying to act like what our character was feeling or if you were the lazy character you have to act lazy.

I think my group needs to work on trying to add more expression when we are talking. I think my group needs to work on trying not to get distracted and not play with whatever prop we have next time.

skipping learning story

IMG20170626101821_1.jpgFor the past few weeks we have been learning how to make a skipping routine. We had to watch some other kids so we could get some ideas of how to move around and how to make different actions with the skipping rope. Then we got put into groups. In our groups we had to talk about what moves we already knew how to do and what ones we could learn, we also talked about what are some special moves that only one or two people could do. Then we started on our skipping routines.

After about one week of trying to make a skipping routine we had some groups share what they and made. Some groups were still having trouble trying to a routine. Sometimes we got to have some free time. The next week we added some music to our routines. That made it was more interesting. But we still had to work out the timing that would work with the music and our routine.

I think my group was really good at trying to add new moves in to our dance by putting in moves that the other groups did not put in. I think my group was really good at trying to learn new moves by trying new moves that we have not done before.
Think that my group was really good at not giving up when we are trying to learn new moves and we would just keep practicing to get it right.

I think my group needs to work on trying to stay focused on our task and not doing anything random like not going and doing whatever skipping we want.I think my group needs to work on trying to do our routine properly when we are performing it to people by not being shy and not  mucking around.

science learning story

Last week there was a big metal crate outside of Room 3. The big metal crate was called LAB IN A BOX. Lab in a box was a place where you can make things like rockets, explode balloons, pest trapping, mini beasts and dried ice. We got to choose three that we wanted to do. I chose dried ice, exploding balloons and rockets.

For dried ice we froze some fruit, flowers and marshmallows. Sue had to use gloves to put the things in the freezer because the ice was so cold that it could burn your hand. Then we smashed the flower, fruit and marshmallow. We found out that the reason why they broke so easily was because the middle was frozen and that is why it was so easy to break.

Next in the exploding  balloons group. Sue could not get the gas working so we did another thing called egg in vinegar, if you want to know what that is it is where you an egg and put some vinegar into a bottle and then in a day or two the egg should be bouncey.

The last workshop was my favorite because it was rockets. In rockets we had to get a little plastic bottle, we then had to make a mixture of water and baking powder, then we put that into a the lid of the little plastic bottle. Now we have one more thing to do we had to pour a little bit of vinegar into the bottle then we put the lid on and shook it a little bit and then it exploded. We noticed that if you put much vinegar in it and not enough baking powder your rocket will not pop and go very high. So we had a second try and we put a lot of the baking powder mixture and we filled the bottle up with about a quarter of vinegar. That made it go very high. The reason it exploded was because the air pressure was getting too tight in the small bottle it had to be in a bigger space but since it did not have a bigger space it popped the lid off and sprung into the air.

I think I was good at trying to guess the gas that Sue was showing us.
I think I was good at trying to stay focused on what she is talking about.

I think I need to work on trying not to sit next to my friends.

I think I need to work on trying to work with other people other then my friends.

Dialogue learning story

Since term two we have been we have been writing dialogues. A dialogue is when we are given picture or a video and we have to write a story about that scene. We have done a lot of dialogues like Monkey Symphony, Tent Talk, the car ride to Auckland and the Paper, Scissors, Rock.

Then we had to choose one of the dialogues to improve and publish it onto our blogs. I chose improve my Monkey Symphony. Once I improved it I shared it with the Ms Ardelle to get feedback. Once I got the feedback we had to work on it even more and apply the feedback. When I was done improving my writing to the best it can be it was time for me to publish on my blog.

I think I was good at using lots of descriptive language and similes e.g “you’re like a cat that won’t stop meowing”.
I think I was good at knowing where to put punctuation.
E.g: can I have a turn on the piano please Johnny?

I need to work on trying to introduce the characters so the reader knows who they are and also try and paint a picture for the reader to know where the scene is set.

Monkey symphony

                       THE FLASH BACK
Jason: Farr Johnny man, you can play the piano like the boss. You don’t need to practice you are already so good.

Johnny: Thanks Jason! Oi she’s finally not watching me like a hawk. I can finally do whatever I want.

Jason: (whispers) Can I have a turn on the piano Johnny?
Johnny: Sure just be sensible.

Jason: Ok I will.

Teacher: Jason STOP playing the piano it’s not your turn.

Jason: Blah blah blah why can’t I have a turn? you always let Johnny  have a turn why not me.
Teacher: DON’T YOU blah blah blah me little boy! you have no respect you need to show respect to your teacher and then maybe I might let you have a turn.

Jason: See there you go again using you big loud mouth you're like a cat that won’t stop meowing and you aren’t my mum you can’t make me stop.

Teacher: DON’T YOU DARE LAY A FINGER ON THAT PIANO JASON! or you’ll get it.

Jason: Get what miss a hiding with the wooden stick….. Aye is that your plan to keep being violent to kids ohhhhh you're sad to us.

Teacher: GET OUT JASON YOU ARE THE WORST MONKEY I HAVE EVER TRIED TO TEACH PIANO!

Jason: All goods I don’t care if you kick me out cause I am sick of being treated like a little kid that gets hit with the wooden stick when I get things wrong.

Johnny: No Jason you can’t leave me here to suffer by myself.

Teacher: NO Johnny he can’t stay he has made his decision he can’t come back here now he has to go… now get back to playing the piano

Johnny: But...
Teacher: BUT NOTHING get back to playing the piano Johnny…. Don’t even look at his disgraceful face.

Johnny: Fine.

I was learning to use dialogue to tell a story and paint a picture in the reader's head.

I think I was good at using expression for each character.
For example: BUT NOTHING get back to playing the piano Johnny…. Don’t even look at his disgraceful face.
I think I was good at describing what each character was doing.
For example: Jason STOP playing the piano it’s not your turn.

I think I was good at punctuation and using capital letters when someone was shouting.
For example: GET OUT JASON YOU ARE THE WORST MONKEY I HAVE EVER TRIED TO TEACH PIANO!

Eva's Kapa Haka Learning Story

Are you aware of how hard we have to practice Kapa Haka every Thursday? This story talks about how hard we have to practice.

Our rules are we always have to show discipline a.k.a respect while listening to the tutors or the teachers and also showing respect with the way we speak and posture ourselves. I am good at managing myself because when Matua Todd and Whaea Clare are talking, I listen and use my taringas.

During the past few weeks we have been learning songs  for e.g i ehoa, hareruia and papaki titaha. While we sing, we have to sing strong and proud.  When doing Kapa Haka, I use the K.C skill of participating and contributing because I never give up and I always try my best.

Being in Kapa Haka has made me feel like this has been the greatest opportunity I’ve taken and also it has been such an amazing experience for me. I think I need to work on managing self and at the same time I’m good at it but sometimes I get distracted by the conversations and instead of getting distracted, I should just avoid my friends.

Reading Learning Story (AKA) Book Report

My book is called body and soul.

Its purpose is to entertain me and hook the reader in.

I located information so I found out that there is a boy his dad goes to work at 6.00 in the morning, his mum is sick because she worked at a place that experimented on people. So the boy has to go and get all the food while his mum is sick.

The reason I choose this book is because I read the back of this book and it sounded really interesting and freaky and that really hooked me in, it made me feel like I was there, it also made me feel a little bit scared.

Eva's Art Learning Story

\We were learning to communicate our ideas effectively through our cubist art.

The first thing I had to do was find a good place to help me focus on my work. I had to take a risk and try my best and just go with what was happening  with my art. I had to try not to worry if it didn’t look the same as the cubism art that I had to copy.

I had to try and add my own style to my cubism art by changing the colours of my cubism art. I did that by making it not the same colour as the original piece of cubism art.

When I choose the piece of cubism art that I wanted I had to use light lines to make it more easy to draw the bold lines.

Then we got told to make the lines more bold to make the cubism art stand out more, we also had to shade in some parts that we wanted to be dark and some places we wanted to be light.

Then we had to choose some nice contrasting colours so that it would look nice with the cubism art that we were doing. When we got all of it finished it looked really good. I liked how we got through the whole thing and it turned out really well, also I think I was good at using bold lines and contrasting colours.

My next steps are:
  • Including my own style
  • Stop worrying if it doesn’t look the same.

Eva's Key Competency Expert Profile (My Reflection)

My reflection

My key competency strength is in: Asking for help, aiming for gold and laughing and enjoying things.
because I am good at:
  • Asking for help when I get stuck or don’t get what the problem is about.

  • I always try to aim for gold with whatever task I am doing.

  • I always look for the bright side in things that I find challenging and always try make things funny enjoyable.

The key competency I need to work on using is Relating to Others
I need to get better at working with people that I don’t usually work with.

I will do this by stepping up and choosing other people to work with. (not my friends)

I will do this by: starting to work with boys and other girls that i don’t really work with.
I will do this by: not being picky with who I want to work with (get the teacher to choose who I work with if I am being picky)

Maths learning story

Christian’s family are making some banana poke for a big family gathering at the Akapuanga Hall.

They need 12 tablespoons of coconut cream to make 1 container. How many tablespoons of coconut cream will they need for 38 containers?

They need 252 grams of arrowroot starch to make 1 container. How many grams will they need for 38 containers?

They need 2.6 grams of bananas for 1 container. How many grams of banana’s will they need for 38 containers?

First me and my group thought that we should use timetables. Then we started to ask question like if we were going to use our timetables we would have to know what we were going to times. Then Christian said”what if we do 30x12=360 because then all we would have to find out is what to times the 8 with” so we when with christian’s idea. Then we said”why don’t we just times 8 with 12 like what we did on 30x12” so we did 8x12=96. Then we did 360+96=456. So we work out that christian’s family would have to use 456 tablespoons of coconut cream to make 38 banana poke.

Then me and my group had to think of how to try and work out the answer to the next question. First we did thought that we should use timetables again because that is how we got the answer to the first question. So we did 252x30=7560 arrowroot starch then we knew that we had to times another number so then we did 252x8=2016 arrowroot starch. Then we did 2016+7560=9576 grams of arrowroot starch. So we found out that christian’s family will have to use 9576 grams of arrowroot starch to make 38 banana poke.

We had to think really hard on the next question because the next question was using decimal points so that would make it a lot harder.

We still did the same thing as the last question we had to do 2.6x 30=78. Then we did 2.6x8=20.8. Then we wanted to check that the answer was right. When we checked we got all answers right. But then we had to work out what was 20.8+78 we worked out that 20.8+78=98.8. We also found out that christian’s family had to use 98.8 bananas to make 38 banana poke.

Pataka exhibition day

Pataka Exhibition Day

Aroha Tuakana & Awhina TuakanaPataka Exhibition

For the past few weeks, Aroha and Awhina Tuakana have been focusing on Cubism Art.  On Tuesday the 28th of February, Aroha and Awhina Tuakana went on a trip to the Pataka Exhibition, to learn and discover how to make our own Cubism Art.

Discovering The History of Cubism

Pablo Picasso was a Spanish sculptor and artist meaning he was an expert in art.
Pablo and a man named George Braque worked together and created this piece of artwork. They say that Cubism Art is one object and person that is being drawn from all perspectives but is put into one.
